I'm trying to act like a little fortune teller and answer the questions you guys might have ;o) in advance. So:
How is your place? My place is great - I am staying in a two-family-house with a guy called Tommy, who is working for the Blue Man Group and a dozen bands and owns about 20 (!) guitars. Seems to be a nice guy, a little quiet and really really clean, but very friendly and helpful. So I think we might not become best buddies, but will get along pretty well.
How is the area? To put it in a politically correct way: Ethnically very diverse and "progressing" into the right direction. Meaning: The first impression is a really shabby one - imagine a typical suburb close to a major city with railroad tracks, home to people who really can't afford living in the city. I would not feel comfortable (yet) to walk along the streets alone at night, but there are a few OK places: A block away is a street with just Indian shops - groceries, cafés, jewelers and a little bakery. Right next to the Metro station is the one and only OK pub/bar in the area - with 4 sports TVs and a bartender (called Tony) who smokes although he sounds like he has (had) a "Luftröhrenschnitt". And the laundry place looks clean and nice from the outside (nope, there is no washer in the apartment). There is also a very nice diner with great pancakes and milkshakes (oh yeah, I am gonna get FAT *g*).
What did you do since you arrived? Pretty much nothing in the first week, just relaxing at Brandon's place in Maryland. A LOT since Friday: Moved all my stuff from Maryland to New Jersey, went to IKEA, grocery shopping and drinking in the city yesterday. An experience I will never forget in my entire life: Standing in the parking lot of the grocery store in New Jersey, which is close to the waterfront, and having a stunning view of the skyline of New York at night at the other side of the Hudson River. Felt really weird...
Tomorrow is my first workday and I am super excited!!! Wish me luck that everything will go well, folks! And here are some pictures of my first days in New York/Jersey....
